Why Game Of Thrones Is Overrated

The impact of representation in media can have significant effects on marginalized communities, and the Black community is no exception. For too long, Black people have been underrepresented in popular media and when they are represented, it is often in stereotypical or negative ways. This lack of representation can lead to feelings of isolation and inadequacy, as well as perpetuate harmful myths and biases. In recent years, however, there has been some progress towards more representation, though there is still much work to be done in both the film and TV industries.

Representation Matters

Seeing oneself represented in media is a powerful experience, as it can help one develop a sense of identity and self-worth. For Black people, however, representation in media has been historically lacking. The few representations that have existed have often been one-dimensional and stereotypical, perpetuating harmful myths and biases about Black people. For example, in the past, Black people were often portrayed as either criminals or servants, never given the chance to be seen as fully realized human beings with complex emotions and experiences.

Recently, there have been some steps towards better representation in media. The success of films like Black Panther and TV shows like Pose and Insecure have demonstrated that there is indeed an audience for diverse stories that accurately portray Black experiences. However, this progress is not enough. According to a recent study, only 22% of speaking characters in the top 100 grossing films of 2019 were people of color. Furthermore, only 17% of those characters were Black.

The Harm of Misrepresentation

It is not just the lack of representation that harms the Black community, but also the misrepresentation. Too often, Black people are portrayed in media as dangerous, violent, or unintelligent. This can have real-life consequences, as these stereotypes can lead to discrimination and violence against Black people. Even seemingly harmless stereotypes, like the trope of the sassy, loud Black woman or the magical negro who exists only to help white people, can be harmful as they reduce complex individuals into caricatures.

The erasure of Black people from media can also have profound effects. As writer Ta-Nehisi Coates states, “The belief in being white and the belief that white people matter more than others are fundamentally toxic to a multiracial democracy. It is often said that Trump has no real ideology, which is not true—his ideology is white supremacy in all its truculent and sanctimonious power.” The normalization of whiteness in media can make it easier for white supremacy and racism to be perpetuated, leading to violence and discrimination against people of color.

It is clear that there is still much work to be done in the film and TV industries to improve representation for Black people. It is important for people to continue pushing for change and holding those in power accountable for their actions. As writer Roxane Gay puts it, “Representation only matters when it is more than an afterthought or a half-considered campaign based on tokenism. Representation only matters when real, sustained work is done to expand the doors so that the narrative changes not just for one person but for many.”

Game of Thrones to Sherlock

Representation in media is crucial for people to see themselves as whole beings. For Black people, representation has lacked for far too long, and when representation has existed, it has often been negative. This lack of representation and misrepresentation can lead to harmful stereotypes and perpetuate discrimination and violence against Black people. While progress has been made, there is still much work to be done in expanding doors for representation, so that more Black people can see themselves represented accurately and fully in media.
